New Starter Screening

Pre-Employment Medicals

Pre-Employment Medicals evaluate the health of the prospective employee to match the type of work and working conditions that the job involves. We work with you to evaluate the hazards and risks of the job to ensure that the prospective employee can work safely.

Our standard packages are described below. If they do not meet your company's specific needs then we will be happy to create a bespoke solution for you.

The results of the assessments are delivered to the employer as a written fitness statement.

The Equality Act 2010 came into force in October 2010

Under the act Employers will still be permitted to ask pre-employment health questions but only where the employer has already offered the role to the employee as a conditional offer e.g. subject to satisfactory health checks.

The other situation that an employer can ask questions is where they need to find out if the applicant can “carry out a function that is intrinsic to the work concerned” e.g. manual lifting and handling of heavy items.

Questionnaire Based Assessment

HOHS can screen health questionnaires on employees who have been given a job offer.  We do this via telephone, letter or face to face interview depending on your requirements.

This is suitable for low-risk jobs such as desk-based office work. The applicant completes a questionnaire, which is assessed by an Occupational Health Advisor.

When required we will contact the applicant's GP, or arrange a full medical examination.

We will then issue a "Fitness Statement".

Examination and Interview Based Assessments

One of our Occupational Health Advisors and/or medical officers conducts a structured health interview, which includes coverage of occupational history and health relevant to the job applied for.

The examination includes :

  • Vision screening
  • Height, weight and body mass index
  • Pulse and blood pressure
  • Urinalysis

Medical Assessments for High Risk Positions

For high risk occupations we build onto the examination and interview assessment, adding extra screening as indicated by the job description and risk assessment.

Where respiratory disease is a risk factor we carry out a lung function test and complete a questionnaire covering family history of asthma, exposure to asthmagens, and exposure to respiratory irritants.

When skin disease is a risk factor we conduct a skin examination and complete a skin surveillance questionnaire, including any history of contact and allergic dermatitis, and other exposure to skin sensitisers and irritants.

When noise exposure is a factor we carry out a hearing test and audiometry questionnaire.

If the above examples do not meet your specific needs, please do contact us to discuss your requirements.
